As I was standing on top of slippery basalt rocks, near the edge of the falls, I was immediately struck by a similar cliff in a Hiroshige woodblock print, “Hakone”, circa 1833.

Victoria Falls, the Zambezi River, South Africa, is on the border of Zambia and Zimbabwe. One of the natural wonders of the world has become a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It was brought to the attention of the western world by Dr. David Livingstone in 1855. The “smoke that thunders” is the name given to the falls by the indigenous people who live there. Rainbows are constantly present through the mist that never stops, both day and night, known as moonbows.
