Fingals Cave, Isle of Staffa, Inner Hebrides – National Trust for Scotland. It was formed during lava flow over 50 million years ago. The name Fingal, originates from Irish mythological hero, Fionn mac Cumhaill. Its Gaelic name, Uamh-Binn, meaning cave of melody, was given due to the acoustics created from its naturally arched roof. In 1829 Felix Mendelssohn wrote his Hebrides overture in ode to the cave. Scottish novelist and poet, Sir Walter Scott, described the cave as, “one of the most extraordinary places I have ever beheld… it baffles all description.”
