Oaklawn Race Track Hot Springs, Arkansas

April 2010 The Arkansas Derby
The Apple Blossom Invitational

A wonderful spring journey with Owen and our friends from Kentucky, Renee and Jon Harned...Dogwoods blossoming and cool evening breeze...and of course horse racing.

Some interesting facts about Hot Springs...
- Hernando DeSoto, European Explorer, was the first European to visit this area, prior to this, Native Americans enjoyed the hot springs. The Spanish flag was hung in the “Valley of the Vapors”.
- Hot Springs was known as the “off season capitol of Major League Baseball” in the late 1800”s and 1900”s, Spring training camps were held for Chicago, Pittsburgh, Brooklyn, and Boston.
- Hot Springs was the “neutral” territory for gangsters from Chicago and New York, they would come to enjoy the baths and racing. Al Capone maintained a permanent suite in the Arlington Hotel.

This is a beautiful part of our United States…
